This process can take multiple treatments and the results will often vary considerably depending upon the number and type of colors in the tattoo and the depth of the tattoo in the skin. In general, self-styled India ink tattoos are easier and quicker to respond to laser treatment than the more complicated, multi-colored professional tattoos.

Often the tattoo may not be completely gone but significantly diminished in its visibility. Other methods may be used to remove tattoos such as surgical excision but these will leave permanent scars which if placed carefully may be more acceptable than the original tattoo.
