Gynecomastia is a term describing persistent enlargement of the male breast. Gynecomastia affects about 40 to 60 percent of men, and it may affect only one or both breasts and in varying degrees. Though certain drugs and medical problems have been linked to male breast over-development, there is generally no known cause in the vast majority of cases.

Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure which reduces the size of large breasts in men. The surgery removes fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer and contoured in a masculine appearance. There are a variety of different surgical techniques used to reduce and to reshape the male breast including excisional surgery and/or liposuction. There are risks and complications associated with gynecomastia surgery. After liposuction surgery on the breasts, patients will need to wear a compression garment for 2-4 weeks. If excisional surgery is done, then wound drains may be necessary.
