EYELID SURGERY (Blepharoplasty)
Blepharoplasty is an operation to remove excess skin and fatty tissue from the upper and lower eyelids. Blepharoplasty can improve drooping skin and bagginess around the eyes. It can sometimes help those whose vision has been impaired by sagging skin or fat. Blepharoplasty will not remove crows feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under the eyes or lift ptotic eyelids. Blepharoplasty surgery is customized for every patient depending on his or her particular needs. It can be performed alone involving the upper, lower or both eyelids or in conjunction with other surgical procedures of the eye, face, brow or nose. It is performed on an outpatient basis usually under local anesthesia with sedation. Ellipses of excess skin are first removed from the upper eyelids. The a strip of the orbicularis muscle is trimmed and small amounts of fat removed. The skin incision is then closed with fine sutures. Treatment of the lower eyelids may involve an external skin incision with removal of excess skin and fat. In some patients, an incision can be made just inside the lower eyelid for the purpose of fat removal. In this type of surgery, there is no external scar on the lower eyelid. The sutures are often removed within 5 days after surgery. Eyelid surgery cannot stop the aging process. It can however, diminish the look of loose skin and bagginess in the eyelid region. |
