Breast augmentation is an operation to increase the size and to change the shape of the breast. Inconspicuous incisions are made either around the areola portion of the nipple or below the breast in the inframammary skin crease. The surgeon then creates a space or "pocket" either above or below the muscle of the chest. He then places a breast implant into this space to increase the projection and size of the breast. The skin incisions are then sutured and the patient goes home about 1 to 2 hours later.

The final appearance of the augmented breast is determined by skin elasticity, bone structure, amount of pre-existing breast tissue, size and placement of the implant and the shape of the breast prior to surgery. All breast implants are registered and tracked according to federal law. Patients can generally return to light activities in about 5 to 7 days and strenuous exertions in about 3 to 4 weeks.
