Brachioplasty is a surgical procedure to treat the excess or loose skin of the upper arms. Many patients following bariatric surgery and massive weight loss develop excessive skin redundancy of the upper arms. In some people this may result as just a thickness of the arm tissue and they are often treated with liposuction alone. Many people however, develop deflation or loss of the subcutaneous fatty tissue which results in hanging skin or "bat wings'. The preferred method of treatment in these patients is an excisional (surgical) technique in which the excess skin is removed resulting in a surgical scar. Oftentimes, brachioplasty can be combined with another surgical procedure such as a breast lift or breast augmentation. The most significant factor for patients to consider before undergoing brachioplasty is the placement and appearance of the surgical scars. These scars can vary from quite good and barely noticeable to very prominent and very noticeable.
