Bariatric surgery is specifically recommended for individuals who are morbidly obese and are at severe risk for medical complications associated with diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, degenerative arthritis, etc. After the surgery patients may lose 100 or more pounds over a 1-2 year period. Bariatric plastic surgery is a new sub-specialty of plastic surgery that deals with the excess skin problems of these patients after massive weight loss. There are effective operations to treat the skin redundancies of the abdomen, breasts, arms, thighs and face or neck.
